“Animation isn’t just for kids”. It’s become something of a mantra for lovers of a cinematic form that’s experiencing something of a Golden Age. And nobody exemplifies it more than Australian animator, Adam Elliot, whose latest stop motion offering, Memoir Of A Snail, has been gathering fans and award recognition around the world over the past year.
The Melbourne-based auteur with his own distinctively imperfect style is an Oscar contender once again, after winning awards at Annecy and the London Film Festival. It’s more than 20 years since he took the Oscar for Best Animated Short for Harvie Krumpet, which proved to be his breakthrough movie. Voiced by Geoffrey Rush, it was the story of a man with Tourette’s Syndrome, bad luck and a book of “fakts” round his neck. It set the tone for his subsequent movies. His first feature, Mary And Max was released in 2009 and has since become a fan favourite with its touching story of an eight-year-old girl who forges an unlikely pen pal friendship with a morbidly obese man who has Asperger’s.
Filmed in sepia and cream to reflect its late 70s setting, it starred the voices of Toni Colette, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Eric Bana. Released later this month, his new film centres on Grace, who is separated from her twin brother after a family tragedy. Painfully lonely well into adult life, she eventually makes friends with the elderly Pinky who has “done it all” and whose take no sh*t attitude encourages her to take hold of life with both hands. Sarah Snook is the voice of Grace, while Jacki Weaver is Pinky and the cast also includes Kodi Smit-McPhee and no less than Nick Cave.

#creaturecommandos #daviddastmalchian #dccomics David Dastmalchian has become one of the most sought after performers in modern Hollywood, known for featuring in blockbusters, including The Dark Knight, and Suicide Squad and Oppenheimer. Cinema's favourite goth has also lent his immense creativity to horror movie hits, including Late Night With The Devil, alongside comic books, including writing for his own Count Crowley, and the brand new series, Creature Commandos.
Here, David reflects to Screensphere about the impact of the Commandos' impact on his life, having grown up reading the original Weird War Tales, featuring the team, created by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick. "I love monsters, I love comic books and I love stories about characters seemingly overcoming something insurmountable," he says. "As a kid, to me [Creature Commandos] were the coolest because it was military battle-adventure-superhero-style, but it with very classic, almost universal-style monsters." In Dastmalchian's 2024 limited series take on the comic, the characters include a new team of supernatural soldiers made up of a vampire, Vincent Velcro; a werewolf, Wanda; the Frankenstein-like Lucky Taylor and his carer—who just happens to be a gorgon—Mina Rhodes.
The writer/actor seems so excited to be writing for the mega monster team, which will also see its debut on our screens before the end of the year as part of James Gunn's DCU relaunch, produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation to be released on Max in the US. "Writing these comics for me, is like if you grew up always wanting to be Mario Andretti and all of a sudden you find yourself out on the track getting to drive! I am getting to metaphorically put on the cape, and create and tell this story."
